The following characteristics set Trichopodus microlepis apart from other congeners: an unmarked, silvery or grey body; a dorsal fin with three to four spines; 57–65 scales on the lateral line; 34–40 transverse scales; and a dorsal-fin base length of 14.5–17.3% SL (Ref. 97359).
