Halfmoons resemble perches, with a profoundly elliptical, laterally compressed (side to side) football-shaped body. Their skull is rounded, and they have a small mouth with a blunt nose and one row of sharp teeth. Their caudal fin is shallowly curved and smooth. The scales are tough, thick, and tiny.
