Gold Dust Molly (Poecilia sphenops)
Common Names: Gold Dust Molly, Golden Molly, Gold Dust Livebearer
Family: Poeciliidae
Origin: Central America, Southern Mexico, and parts of the Yucatán Peninsula
Appearance:
The Gold Dust Molly is a vibrant and stunning fish with a golden hue, often speckled with darker, dust-like specks across its body—hence the name “Gold Dust.” They typically have a streamlined body shape, long fins, and a smooth appearance. Male Gold Dust Mollies are generally smaller and more colorful than females, who tend to be more subdued in their coloring. They can grow up to 3 to 4 inches in length.
Temperament:
Gold Dust Mollies are peaceful, social, and active fish, making them ideal for community tanks. They do well with other non-aggressive species. They are also known to be quite curious and enjoy exploring their environment, often swimming in groups. Mollies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young instead of laying eggs.
Water Conditions:
- Temperature: 24°C to 28°C
- pH: 7.0 to 8.0
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
- Tank Setup: Mollies prefer a well-planted tank with plenty of swimming space. A fine-gravel substrate works well, and the addition of floating plants or decor gives them some shelter.
