This species of rainbowfish, known as the forktail blue-eye, is found in rainforest streams of the subfamily Pseudomugilinae. It is native to Papua New Guinea, specifically the southeast region of Popondetta. Formerly thought to be a part of the Popondetta genus, it is now recognized as its own separate species, named Popondichthys.
