The sailfin molly's body is essentially oblong. The mouth is small and turned up, while the head is small and dorsally flattened. The caudal fin is big, rounded, and occasionally has a black tip. The caudal peduncle is broad. The dorsal fin is the point of origin of the pelvic fins.
