This kind of fish is oval in shape and compact, with long filamentous rays that radiate from each pelvic fin. It weighs approximately 9 kg (20 pounds) at its peak. When it is young, it is reddish brown with dark bands; as an adult, it is brown or gray with a whiter belly.
